I have finally worked out with Josh's help how to do this!

Its been over 3 weeks since I arrived in Phnom Penh and started working at the Royal University of Phnom Penh on their Renewable Energy Project. This is the beginning and I am making it up as I go along, so far so good but the progress has been slow. What has happened since arriving:

  • I spent the first 2 1/2 weeks living in a guest house and eating in retaurants near what I call Golden Street (street 278). Its on the other side of town from the univerity so every morning and evening I did the work journey by motorcycle taxi...a thrill a minute. The traffic here has no order...if you cant cross the oncoming traffic to reach the correct side you just head down the side you are on into the oncoming traffic! Traffic lights are like the start of a scooter race, cars dont care about motor scooters and footpaths are fo parking cars on. Most people with cars drive Lexus (?) except expats who arent allowed to! What happens at a cross road with no lights...you woudnt believe it. I have yet to see a traffic accident. So this weekend I am going to the market to buy a second hand bicycle and plan to move up to scooter soon!
  • I moved into an apartment last weekend...its half way between the central market and the university, on the right side of town and away from NGO central. The apartment is on the third floor, two bedrooms, most mod cons, pretty new and gets a bit hot but then everything in PP is hot and going to get hotter. The rent is $500 per month which is actually good value though a bit on the high side here. The good thing is that at night its quiet because there are no bars around and so very few tourists. We have yet to have a wedding in the street....but that will happen.
  • It rained today....the first time and I mean rain! Wonderfully cooling, difficult to get to work, and afterwards...the humidity just kills you.
  • Work...thats another story for another day but will get onto that. Will send out the site info to people so you can keep in touch. Hope you are all well and happy!
  • Forgot...I have a digital piano (Yamaha NP 30) which is almost great and have started some lessons...not quite the same as JCSM but..........

  3. Hi Mike
Glad you are having a Cambodian adventure
I hope you don't get seduced into becoming a Buddist monk or meet any Pol Pot sympathisers
We are currently being entertained by the Kevin. Julia popularity contest with judgement on Monday
They are throwing an astonishing amount of mud at eachother
It's like a Monte python comedy with the moral high ground smeared with offensive and unbelievable hypocracy
    All the best
